Understanding Metabolism: What Really Happens in Your Body

Stoffwechsel verstehen Was wirklich in Deinem Körper passiert

What is metabolism?

Metabolism encompasses all the chemical processes that take place in our bodies to produce energy, process nutrients, and maintain vital bodily functions.

In this process, components from food are absorbed, converted, and further processed by the body. This allows the body, for example, to provide energy, build new cells, or support important functions such as growth, regeneration, and the regulation of body temperature.

A healthy metabolism is therefore important for our overall well-being and for ensuring that our bodies can function optimally.

Metabolism & Digestion: Here’s the Difference

Metabolism and digestion are often confused with one another, but they perform different functions in the body.

1. Digestion

Food is broken down into smaller components in the gastrointestinal tract so that nutrients can be absorbed.

2. Metabolism

The body further processes these nutrients, converting them into energy or using them for growth, regeneration, and cell building.

Digestion thus provides the foundation—metabolism then processes the energy obtained.

How Metabolism Works

Metabolism encompasses numerous processes that take place in the body around the clock. During these processes, nutrients from food are absorbed, processed, and used for various tasks—such as energy production, regeneration, or the formation of new bodily structures.

Generally, there are two main metabolic processes:

1. Catabolism

During catabolism, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down. This provides the body with the energy it needs for movement, body heat, organ functions, and many other processes.

2. Anabolism

Anabolism uses this energy to build new cells, muscles, and tissues. It also supports recovery and the maintenance of vital bodily functions.

Both processes work together constantly to ensure that the body is supplied with energy, can regenerate, and remains functional.

Catabolism and anabolism constantly work together in metabolism: While the body gains energy, it simultaneously uses it for building, regeneration, and vital functions.

These organs are involved

Various organs are involved in metabolism and work closely together:

  • Liver: Processes and stores important nutrients.
  • Pancreas: Regulates blood sugar levels through hormones such as insulin.
  • Stomach & intestines: Break down food and absorb nutrients.
  • Kidneys: Filter waste products from the body.
  • Heart & circulatory system: Transport oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

Together, these organs ensure that the body is supplied with energy and that vital functions are maintained.

Various organs work closely together in the metabolic process to supply the body with energy and maintain vital functions.

Why Metabolism Is Important

Metabolism ensures that our body is supplied with energy and that vital functions are maintained.

Among other things, it helps:

  • Processing nutrients
  • To provide energy
  • build cells
  • regenerate the body,
  • and regulate body temperature

If the metabolism becomes unbalanced, this can affect overall well-being and various bodily functions.

Possible metabolic disorders

If the metabolism becomes unbalanced, this can have various effects on the body. Metabolic disorders can be congenital or develop over the course of a person’s life.

Among the most well-known metabolic disorders are:

1. Diabetes mellitus

Blood sugar levels can no longer be properly regulated.

2. Thyroid disorders

Thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, can slow down or speed up the metabolism.

3. Lipid metabolism disorders

These involve, for example, elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

4. Metabolic disorders caused by lifestyle factors

Lack of exercise, stress, or an unbalanced diet can affect metabolism.

The earlier potential symptoms are recognized, the better the body can be supported.

Tips for an Active Metabolism

An active metabolism can help ensure the body is optimally supplied with energy. Diet and exercise play an important role in this.

1. Eat a balanced diet

Whole-grain products, vegetables, healthy fats, and protein provide important nutrients.

2. Exercise regularly

Exercise and daily physical activity support many metabolic processes.

3. Stay Hydrated

Water supports the body in important metabolic processes.

4. Get Enough

Sleep Rest helps the body regenerate and maintain energy balance.

5. Reduce Stress

Less stress can positively influence overall well-being.

Naturopathic Support

Metabolism influences many important processes in the body—from energy production to digestion and regeneration. If it becomes unbalanced, this can manifest as fatigue, exhaustion, or a general feeling of malaise, among other symptoms. Certain medicinal plants are traditionally used to naturally support metabolism and overall well-being. We’ve compiled a list here of which plants are particularly popular and how they’re traditionally used.

Selected medicinal plants are traditionally used to naturally support metabolism, digestion, and overall well-being

  • Hawthorn is traditionally used to support the cardiovascular system.
  • Artichoke supports digestion and fat metabolism.
  • Horsetail is known for supporting excretion and fluid balance.
  • Masterwort promotes balance and inner Balance.
  • Kava-kava has a relaxing effect and lifts the mood.
  • Goldenrod supports the body's elimination processes.
