Interesting facts about Meisterwurz

  • Originally found only in the Bavarian Alps.
  • Cumarines can cause photosensitivity when taken in large quantities.
  • 16th–19th centuries: ubiquitous in medicine and folklore.

Effects & Properties

Cumarins (Oxypeucedanin, Ostruthin): expectorant, circulatory stimulant, photosensitizing. Essential oils: antimicrobial, promotes wound healing. bitter compounds: Stimulates the liver, pancreas, and digestive glands.

Features: expectorant, aids digestion, antimicrobial, promotes wound healing, boosts the immune system.

Applications

Goldenseal for respiratory conditions

With colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses, the mucus in the airways is often thick and difficult to cough up. The coumarins in goldenseal help thin the mucus and make it easier to cough up. At the same time, the essential oils have an antimicrobial effect against pathogens in the airways. This relieves the airways and reduces inflammation.

Peucedanum ostruthium for loss of appetite

Loss of appetite occurs when the digestive glands produce insufficient secretions and the hunger signal fails to materialize. As a classic bitter herb, masterwort stimulates the digestive glands via the taste receptors in the mouth. The liver, gallbladder, and pancreas release more secretions, triggering a feeling of hunger and improving digestive function.

Goldenseal for stomach cramps

Stomach cramps occur when the stomach becomes overloaded due to incomplete digestion and poor gastric outflow. The bitter compounds in goldenseal increase the production of digestive juices, improve gastric emptying, and relieve cramps by relaxing the smooth muscles of the stomach. Stomach emptying improves, and the cramps subside.

Peucedanum ostruthium for flatulence

Flatulence is caused by putrefactive gases resulting from incomplete digestion. Goldenseal stimulates all the digestive glands—the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas—to ensure that food is fully broken down. When food is completely digested before it reaches the large intestine, no putrefactive gases are produced, and thus no flatulence occurs.

Goldenseal for Gout and Rheumatism

Gout is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood—the bitter compounds in goldenseal stimulate digestion and liver metabolism. An activated liver metabolism improves the excretion of water-soluble substances through the kidneys, including uric acid. This lowers its concentration in the blood and prevents the formation of crystalline deposits in the joints.

Peucedanum ostruthium for fever

When fever is caused by infections, goldenseal has an antimicrobial effect against the pathogens while also stimulating the immune system. The circulation-boosting effect of the coumarins maintains peripheral blood flow, allowing heat to be released. This accelerates recovery.

Goldenseal as an aphrodisiac

The coumarins in goldenseal improve blood flow and optimize microcirculation. Improved blood flow is an important prerequisite for normal erectile function—which is why goldenseal has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac.

Instructions for Use

Used as a bitter elixir for short-term treatment. Applied externally to wounds.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use with caution—coumarins affect blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding.

Contraindications

Not in cases of stomach or duodenal ulcers (bitter compounds stimulate stomach acid production). Not in cases of gallstones (stimulation of bile production may dislodge stones). Sensitivity to light: Use sunscreen.
