Lagom: The Swedish Formula for Happiness and a Balanced Life

We’re all constantly searching for true happiness—whether in our careers, in love, or in everyday life. But is there actually a universal formula for it? If you ask the Swedes, the answer is a resounding yes!

Their secret is called “Lagom.” The word can best be translated as “not too much, not too little” or simply “just right.” It describes the art of finding the golden mean and living a life in perfect balance.

1. The Viking Mug: Where Does the Term Come From?

According to legend, the history of this way of life dates back to the time of the Vikings. When the Scandinavian warriors gathered in the evenings, they would pass a shared drinking mug around the circle. The Swedish word for “team” is “lag, and the word for “around” is “om.”

Over the centuries, “laget om” (once around the team) evolved into the word “lagom.” Even back then, there was an unspoken rule: Everyone was allowed to drink only as much that there would be enough left for everyone in the group at the end. Moderation and a sense of community were thus firmly anchored in the concept from the very beginning.

2. What Does Science Say? The Evidence in the Happiness Report

Year after year, this principle of moderation proves to work on an international level. In the global World Happiness Report, which measures factors such as personal well-being, life expectancy, gross domestic product, and social support, the Scandinavian countries—and Sweden in particular—consistently rank among the top ten.

3. The Happy Middle: Contentment in the Here and Now

Lagom means turning away from the constant longing for “higher, faster, further.” It focuses on what’s already there and celebrates contentment. Swedes consciously take time for the little moments, enjoy the present, and don’t chase unrealistic ideals. They’ve understood that those who find the right balance also find happiness.

7 Tips: How to Bring Lagom into Your Everyday Life

Lagom is at the heart of the Swedish lifestyle. It combines social awareness, sustainability, and a healthy sense of proportion. The beauty of it is that you don’t have to completely turn your life upside down to benefit from this philosophy. Even small changes in various areas of life can make a big difference.

1. Celebrate Breaks: The Art of “Fika”

For Swedes, taking good care of themselves and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a given. A firmly established ritual in everyday life is “fika”—a mindful coffee break, usually spent with colleagues, friends, or family, often accompanied by a cinnamon bun (kanelbulle).

2. Lagom at Work: No Overtime for the Ego

Lagom is also firmly rooted in the Swedish workplace. Trying to shine by constantly working overtime is not considered desirable. Instead, flat hierarchies, team-based decision-making, and strictly adhering to the end of the workday are valued. Hard work is important, but so is making time for family, hobbies, and relaxation.

3. Lagom on the Plate: Enjoyment Without Sacrifice

In the kitchen, Lagom means living sustainably and healthily—without sacrificing enjoyment. It’s about eating just enough to feel pleasantly full and strictly avoiding food waste.

4. Minimalism in Home and Wardrobe

The same principle applies within your own four walls: neither too much nor too little. A cluttered home and a chaotic closet often lead to unconscious stress and a bad mood.

  • At home: Reduce furniture and decor to the essentials. Opt for harmonious, soft colors. A Lagom home feels airy and has a calming effect.
  • In your closet: Use the “capsule wardrobe” principle. Instead of mountains of fast-fashion clothes, own just a few high-quality pieces that are timeless and versatile enough to mix and match.

5. Take only as much from nature as you need

A central pillar of Lagom is treating the environment with respect. This means consuming with moderation. Instead of constantly chasing the latest trends, focus on durability, upcycling, and secondhand items. Lagom thus rejects the throwaway culture and shows that a more sustainable lifestyle doesn’t require painful sacrifice, but rather comes with a clear conscience.

6. Fair Coexistence: The Lagom Society

Whether on a crowded subway, in a drawn-out meeting, or in a long line at the supermarket checkout: our daily lives are often marked by people looking the other way, stress, or quiet eye-rolling. Swedish society offers a counterpoint to this.

7. A Morning Boost of Freshness: “Morgondopp”

Many Swedes start their day with a “Morgondopp,” a short, refreshing dip in the nearest lake or the sea—and they often do this all year round.

Small Tips for Even More Balance in Life

1. Use what’s already there

Repairing instead of buying new is easier on your wallet and the environment.

2. Get out into nature

Spend a few minutes every day in the fresh air to ground yourself.

3. Digital detox

Treat yourself to regular breaks from your smartphone, social media, and constant availability.

4. Stay Calm in Traffic

Drive at a moderate, relaxed speed—it’s easier on everyone’s nerves.

5. Know Your Limits

Say “no” more often when your own energy reserves are depleted. People suffering from burnout, in particular, benefit from setting such conscious boundaries.
