The queen of liver herbs—documented since pre-Roman times and prized by Hildegard von Bingen.
Interesting facts about milk thistle
- Protects liver cells from toxins—even death cap poisoning can be treated!
- Prescribed as early as ancient times to treat snake bites.
- Hildegard von Bingen was a big fan of milk thistle.
Effects & Properties
Silymarin (Silibinin, isosilybinin, silychristin, silydianin): These flavolignan compounds protect liver cell membranes from toxic substances, promote protein synthesis in liver cells (regeneration), and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Silymarin is liver-protective and liver-regenerative – even in cases of severe poisoning.
Features: liver-regenerating, detoxifying, decongestant, deacidifying, revitalizing.
Applications
Milk thistle for fatty liver and chronic liver disease
In cases of fatty liver and chronic liver disease, fat and waste products accumulate in the liver cells—liver function declines, and inflammation sets in. Silymarin stimulates liver cell regeneration: it protects the cell membrane from further damage, promotes protein synthesis for cell repair, and removes fat and waste products from the cells.
Silybum marianum for varicose veins and hemorrhoids
Varicose veins and hemorrhoids are often caused by portal vein congestion: The overworked liver cannot process the nutrient-rich blood from the portal vein quickly enough, causing the blood to back up and the veins to dilate. Milk thistle stimulates liver metabolism, relieves portal vein congestion, and improves venous return. Varicose veins and hemorrhoids subside.
Milk thistle for alcohol abuse
Alcohol is broken down in the liver, producing highly toxic byproducts (acetaldehyde) that damage liver cells. Silymarin protects liver cells from these toxins by stabilizing the cell membrane and activating detoxification enzymes. This allows the liver to break down alcohol more effectively without suffering irreversible damage.
Silybum marianum for infectious hepatitis
In viral hepatitis, the virus directly attacks the liver cells and triggers an inflammatory immune response. Silymarin protects the remaining liver cells from further damage and stimulates the regeneration of damaged cells. It promotes protein synthesis in the liver cells, accelerating the regeneration process.
Milk thistle for skin ulcers
Many skin ulcers and chronic skin conditions are linked to liver function—an overburdened liver excretes waste products through the skin. Milk thistle stimulates liver metabolism, relieves the skin of its detoxification burden, and supports the healing process from within. Topically, milk thistle oil can be used to treat nonspecific rashes.
Silybum marianum for digestive problems
Slow digestion, bloating, and a feeling of fullness are often caused by an overworked liver that produces too little bile. Milk thistle stimulates the liver cells to produce more bile—more bile in the intestines improves fat digestion and intestinal motility. Digestion runs more smoothly.
Instructions for Use
4–6-week treatment courses, several times a day, repeatable several times a year. As a tea, drops, or a ready-to-use medication with a defined silymarin content.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
As a precaution, we advise against its use—there are insufficient studies on its safety during pregnancy.
Milk thistle and medications
No accelerated drug metabolism – milk thistle is compatible with birth control pills and pain relievers.
