Thunderweed – the sacred plant of the weather god, the Native Americans’ North American remedy for malaria. Not related to cannabis! Use only as a short-term treatment. DO NOT use during pregnancy.
Interesting facts about water hemp
- "Thunderweed" was the sacred name given to this plant by Native American cultures—it was believed to be under the protection of the weather god.
- For centuries, it was the most important remedy for fever and malaria in North America. *King's American Dispensatory* (1898) lists it as the most commonly used fever remedy in the United States.
- The fresh plant sap acts as a natural insect repellent—insects find the scent of the essential oil repulsive.
Effects & Properties
Eupatorin (sesquiterpene lactone): Directly stimulates the immune system's defense cells—phagocytes (macrophages), natural killer cells (NK cells), and T lymphocytes are activated and mobilized.
Polysaccharides: They activate pattern recognition receptors on immune cells (Toll-like receptors)—this is the innate immune system’s first alarm signal. Cytokine release and phagocytosis are ramped up.
Essential oil + tannins: Directly antimicrobial and sweat-inducing – promote the body's active heat dissipation.
Important: The ingredients have a strong irritating effect—do not use for long-term treatment!
Features: Immunostimulant, antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory.
Applications
Eupatorium perfoliatum for flu-like illnesses
At the onset of a viral cold, the immune system does not have enough time to immediately produce sufficient immune cells. Water hemp stimulates precisely this initial immune response: macrophages are activated for phagocytosis, NK cells for killing infected cells, and T lymphocytes for adaptive immunity. At the same time, the essential oil has a direct antiviral effect on the viral envelope. The result: The infection is brought under control sooner, and the illness is shorter and milder.
Water hemp for fever
Water hemp combats fever in a different way than ibuprofen: Ibuprofen chemically blocks the fever signal—which also suppresses the beneficial immune function of fever. Water hemp, on the other hand, supports the immune system so effectively that the infection is eliminated sooner and the body no longer needs the fever. In addition, the essential oil has a diaphoretic effect—the body actively cools itself down without completely blocking the fever response.
Eupatorium perfoliatum for joint pain
The "exhausted" feeling associated with the flu occurs because the immune system releases chemicals that sensitize muscle pain receptors—forcing us to rest. Water hemp accelerates the elimination of the pathogen (virus/bacteria): The sooner the infection is brought under control, the faster the body aches disappear. Additionally, eupatorin and related compounds have a direct analgesic effect on pain receptors.
Instructions for Use
For short-term use—in acute cases, several times a day, up to once an hour. Not for long-term use.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
DO NOT use – irritating ingredients are contraindicated.
Allergy to composite flowers
Eupatorium is a member of the Asteraceae family. If you have a known allergy to chamomile, yarrow, or arnica, consult a therapist beforehand.
