The Origins of Pride Month and Christopher Street Day (CSD)
Pride Month originated in New York in June 1969. At the time, protests against police violence and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community took place at the famous “Stonewall Inn” bar.
At that time, raids, arrests, and discrimination based on sexual orientation were not uncommon. The Stonewall Inn was therefore considered by many to be one of the few safe places. When patrons fought back against repeated police assaults, the so-called “Stonewall Riots” broke out. These events are still regarded today as a major turning point in the fight for equality and social acceptance.
In Germany, this movement gave rise to what is known as Christopher Street Day (CSD). The name commemorates Christopher Street in New York, where the Stonewall Inn is located. Today, colorful demonstrations, parades, and events take place in many cities, serving as a symbol of diversity, openness, and human rights.
