Sunbathing with Caution: Make Sure You Use the Right Sunscreen!

The first warm rays of sunshine lure us outside, spark our desire for a beach vacation, and give us a healthy, summery tan. But as lovely as the warm light may be, the sun’s power is far too often underestimated.

Applying sunscreen from head to toe is often seen as a hassle in everyday life—or simply forgotten out of sheer convenience. Yet, extreme caution is especially needed on those first hot summer days! After the long winter months, our skin is extremely sensitive to light because its natural protective barrier hasn’t yet built up. The consequences usually follow faster than expected: a painful sunburn. Reliable sunscreen with the appropriate SPF is therefore not an option, but a necessity.

Facts and myths about sunbathing

There are many persistent myths surrounding the sun. But what’s really true? We’ve taken a closer look at the six most common claims for you.

1. “Tanned skin protects against sunburn”

Tanning is purely a protective mechanism of the skin against cell damage that has already occurred. The resulting natural SPF is minimal and is by no means sufficient to protect you from permanent damage.

2. “Sunlight is good for your mental health”

Daylight stimulates the body’s production of the “happiness hormone” serotonin, which has a direct mood-boosting effect. It also synchronizes our natural sleep-wake cycle, which improves sleep, concentration, and strengthens the immune system. Additionally, UV-B radiation is essential for the body’s production of vitamin D, which ensures healthy bones, muscles, and immune function.

3. “It’s only dangerous when the skin turns red”

Visible sunburn is primarily caused by UV-B rays. But danger lurks even without redness: UV-A rays penetrate deep into the skin layers, destroy collagen, and can damage the DNA of cells. The damage accumulates over the course of a lifetime and, in the worst case, can lead to skin cancer.

4. “You can’t get sunburned in the shade”

While you’re exposed to less direct radiation in the shade, you’re by no means completely safe. Light-colored surfaces like sand, water, concrete, or buildings reflect up to 85% of UV radiation. That’s why it’s possible to get sunburned even under a beach umbrella or on a cloudy day.

5. “The more often I apply sunscreen, the longer I’m protected”

The skin’s natural protection lasts just 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skin type. A sun protection factor (SPF) extends this time window only once. Reapplying sunscreen does not double or extend the protection time. Nevertheless, regular reapplication is important to maintain the existing protection, as sunscreen is worn off by sweat, water, and friction.

6. “More is better”

That’s absolutely true! Most people use far too little sunscreen, meaning the SPF listed on the bottle isn’t even achieved in the first place.

Why sun protection is so important

For many, summer is the best time of the year, and relaxing in the sun is simply part of it for most people. But as pleasant as the warmth is, the long-term consequences of UV damage are underestimated. Our skin is the body’s largest organ—and it never forgets.

1. The skin’s memory: The risk of skin cancer

Every instance of intense UV exposure leaves irreparable damage in the DNA of skin cells, but we often don’t see the consequences until decades later. If the cells’ repair mechanisms are permanently overwhelmed, the damaged cells can divide uncontrollably. Thus Skin cancer often develops very slowly.

2. Invisible Damage: Premature Skin Aging and Wrinkles

In addition to the health risks, too much sun exposure also leaves visible marks. UV rays penetrate deep into the connective tissue, where they destroy the body’s own collagen and elastin. The consequences of this process are irreversible:

  • The skin noticeably loses elasticity
  • Wrinkle formation is drastically accelerated
  • Irregular pigmentation occurs

Sun protection is therefore not only a shield for your health, but also the most effective anti-aging remedy there is.

5 golden rules for healthy sunbathing

To ensure your sunbathing remains carefree, you should follow these five essential rules:

1. Know your own sun sensitivity

Every skin type reacts differently. Those with very fair skin automatically belong to the risk group. Additional risk factors for developing skin cancer include a family history of the disease and the number of sunburns you’ve suffered over the course of your life.

2. Avoid the midday sun

UV radiation reaches its peak between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, you should stay in the shade. It’s better to save extensive sunbathing for the late afternoon.

3. Don’t stay in the sun too long

If you have sensitive skin, cell damage can occur after just a few minutes in direct sunlight. The rule of thumb is: Never stay out in the sun for the full duration indicated by your sunscreen’s SPF rating; instead, move into the shade no later than halfway through that time.

4. Don’t forget sunscreen for your lips

The skin on your lips is extremely thin and lacks its own pigments or sebaceous glands. Since regular sunscreen is usually skipped when applying it to the face, the lips remain unprotected. This can lead to painful UV-induced cold sores or, in the long term, even lip cancer. Therefore, use special lip balms with a high SPF.

5. Pay attention to the age of the sunscreen

Chemical UV filters break down over time and lose their effectiveness. An opened product is generally only reliably effective for 12 months. You should therefore replace any opened leftovers from the previous year.

The right after-care: Skincare after sun exposure

After a day of UV exposure, the skin needs intensive regeneration to relieve tightness and prevent long-term damage.

1. Gentle cleansing

Thoroughly shower off sweat, sand, and any remaining sunscreen. Use mild, moisturizing shower gels. Avoid scrubs or harsh cleansers, which further damage the stressed skin barrier.

2. Pat dry gently

Do not rub the skin dry after showering; instead, gently pat it dry with a soft towel.

3. Moisturize

After-sun lotions provide intense moisture, cool heated skin, and relieve the typical tightness or itching.

4. Don’t forget to drink enough!

Sunscreen and skincare work from the outside—but your skin also needs support from the inside in the heat. Through sweating, the body loses a tremendous amount of fluid, which you need to replenish quickly.
