Herpes: react acutely and act preventively
Herpes is a widespread infectious disease. The infected person carries the herpes viruses permanently, and they usually make themselves felt on the lip. This is what happens with herpes?
The first infection with herpes can be completely without symptoms. However, the first infection is usually the one with the most severe course. Before the red blisters form, the infected person can already feel the first signs. A tingling, itching or burning sensation as well as an unpleasant feeling of tension in the affected area can be harbingers of herpes. Sometimes the first infection is accompanied by fever, headache and malaise. The immune system is stressed by the viruses, which can also become noticeable through swelling of the lymph nodes.
Typically, at the first symptoms appear red blisters, which are filled with fluid. The blisters burst open after a few days and may hurt. They form a crust and leave a flat ulcer, which heals within about two to three weeks.
How does the infection with herpes occur?
Infection with herpes is usually transmitted through saliva, urine, stool, or skin lesions.Â
The fluid of the herpes blisters are particularly contagious. The fluid should therefore not be touched directly and the blisters should not be opened intentionally. The risk of infection is already lower when the blisters are crusted. but even then there is still an acute risk of infection. After two to three weeks, all external symptoms should have subsided. The danger of infection through touch is now over. If the virus is dormant, infection is not possible.
Direct contact with herpes, especially with the liquid is the greatest risk of infection. Kissing, close cuddling and even sharing glasses can lead to infection when herpes is active. The virus can also be transmitted through sneezing and coughing.Â
In the case of genital herpes, touching the herpes is also sufficient. Therefore, a condom is not sufficient protection, because possibly not the entire affected area is covered and despite the use of the condom can come into direct skin contact with the rash.Â
What promotes a herpes outbreak?
After the first appearance of herpes, it can reappear individually frequently or very rarely. Triggers of herpes are usually associated with a weakened immune system. A cold or other infectious diseases are often triggers of the viruses. But also mental and physical stress or too little sleep and relaxation stresses the body and can lead to a herpes rash.Â
